Writing State of Affairs for 2026

What I plan on working on for the year, what drafts are close to finishing, and other news regarding my writing!

Welcome to Year 2 of this silly blog! And for the second year, I’d like to speculate on what I plan on getting done writing-wise for the year ahead. I already have a lot of plans for what I want to work on for the new year, and while a lot of it probably won’t get done, it’s nice to think of what could happen over the course of a year. I mean, damn! We’ve got a whole year to work with again!

Let’s think of this as my New Year’s Resolution post for the upcoming year; I’ll come back at the end of the year and post what did (and did not) get worked on this year, and we can have a cute little reminiscence over 2026 as a whole. Sound good?

Right off the bat, much like last year, I don’t know what this year has in store for me. We’re fully winging it. I do know that I want to do NaNoWriMo again in November, but that’s my only real plans for the year, and it’s like ten months away. We’ll shoot for a lower bar in case I have responsibilities and expectations pop up where I can’t spend every waking hour focused on writing.

And hey! If you want to get these posts in your inbox as soon as they are released, feel free to subscribe! It’s free of charge, and doesn’t require an account to view!

Also, if you’re interested in supporting me financially and you like what you see, consider checking out my Ko-Fi! I post a snippet of my latest posts there a day before they go live, exclusive to Ko-Fi followers. I’d like to keep this blog free for as long as possible, so consider subscribing there so I can keep doing so!

Now, let’s get back into it!

Creative Writing Plans

Of course, the main thing I write is creative works. If you followed along for my NaNoWriMo journey, you should be somewhat familiar in what I’ve been working on in this regard.

Mainly, the goal for this year is to try to get published. Kinda wild concept for me because that has been my goal since I was a child, but I’m in a space now where that’s feasible. Shocking, I know! I have a couple of short stories currently in the publishing cycle, and Undulating Waves, my main novella from NaNo, will be joining the fray sometime by summer. Hopefully.

Secondly, I want to finish King’s Retribution. This is a novella plan that I’ve been working on since 2024, and have expanded on it so much that it very well could become a novel. I took a break from it at the end of 2025 because I wasn’t getting anywhere with it, but I have some newfound inspiration, and I’d like to try to get the story to work again. Staring at this draft fills me with dread sometimes, and I would really like to get out of the writing muck with that one.

Outside of that, I might work on Fires From Within, but that’s fully up to fate. And every other plan is dependent on vibes. Comparably, 2025 was a weird year motivation-wise, so I’m leaving this open mostly so that if I get bored of my current WIPs and get struck with inspiration somewhere else, I can work on that hypothetical story as well.

Fanfiction Writing Plans

Alongside creative writing in general, I also write fanfiction, albeit less consistently since starting this Substack. I’ll be honest: I don’t know what I will get done this year for fanfiction writing, since it’s mostly for fun and I don’t really have a lot of time to dedicate to it. If I have some free time this year, I’ll work on getting Turnabout Transposed Act 1 edits out, and hopefully get at least one chapter of Act 2 out.

All other writing plans for my AO3 page are gonna be suspended, for now. I’m gonna prioritize getting Turnabout Transposed into a functioning state again, and then once Act 2 is up for realsies, I’d like to work on Three Fated Souls again. But, again, this is all hypothetical since I’m not sure if I’ll get around to working on any of these.

Though, I do have fanfiction writing commissions open on my Ko-Fi, if you’re interested in checking that out!

If you’ve ever had a fanfiction idea, but can’t seem to execute it and don’t want to use ChatGPT because its ruining our environment, consider supporting an indie writer!

Blog Writing Plans

And now, the main event: what the hell do I want to do with this Substack this year? I plan on writing more about the books I’ve been reading this year, and more about writing in general. Obviously, I will forever and always write about video games because it’s constantly in my brain, I cannot escape, but I planned for this blog to be a bridge between my two interests of books and games, and I’m not gonna give up on that plan.

Of course, my main blog posts will be up every week on Wednesday at 3 PM EST, where I’ll talk for an indeterminate amount of time about whatever the hell is in my brain at that moment. I got a lot of ideas coming up still, like a personal essay on emulation and a retrospective on the Poppy War series, so stay tuned for those releasing later this month!

Got quite a few ideas for the upcoming year, but if you have anything you want me to ramble about for <5,000 words, feel free to leave a comment!

Or, you can always send me an ask on Tumblr, my asks are always open on there (though, you do need an account to send me an ask, I’m not about to allow unsolicited anonymous messages on Tumblr lol).

Send Me A Suggestion!

And, relatively recently, I started up a mini review series called “Sunday Mini Stackin’” (SMS) where I review games and/or books that I’ve played/read recently in less than 3,000 words. Usually, they’ll be games/books that I love so much, I don’t have enough thoughts for a full review, and those posts will be up bi-weekly on Sundays at 7 PM EST. My next SMS actually goes live this weekend, where I review the Professor Layton crossover with Ace Attorney, so stay tuned for that!

I’ve been considering for a bit whether or not I should embed an MP3 file of me reading my posts at the top, so for people who don’t have the time to sit and read a full, long-ass post, they can pop some earbuds in and listen instead. Lemme know if you’d be interested in seeing that!

Also, finally, I do plan on starting up a new mini-series come the end of the month, updating y’all briefly on backlog progress because it’d be fun to talk casually about the games I’ve played, the books I’ve read, and any additions I’ve made to my collections over the month. It’ll be called “Monthly Backlog Updates” (or something along those lines, if I can think of something catchier), and they’ll go live on the last day of the month every month at noon EST starting 1/31, so stay tuned!

I have a lot of plans for this Substack, and I’m excited to see where it’ll go this year, so consider subscribing for more!

And, that’s about it! I’ll update periodically on how I’m doing regarding my writing plans on my socials, so feel free to follow for those!

Okay, I feel like I’ve officially shilled out everything I can for my work; this tires me out to write just as much as it probably does to read, I’ll be so real. But, y’know, doing this for free doesn’t pay my bills, and I don’t want to make a Stripe account to open paid newsletters.

Kind of excited to see where this goes this year! I mostly started this on a whim last minute last year, but I got a lot of ideas in the works, and I can see it flourishing in time! Next week, I’m still posting New Year’s stuff, but this time, it’s about how to tackle a backlog, deal with backlog burnout, and create a backlog that doesn’t make you sad to look at. Stay tuned!

And as always, see you next week!
