NeeineArts' State of Affairs (for writing)

I know what you must be thinking: “Rey, why haven’t you posted anything on AO3 since January???”

And frankly, I don’t even think I have an answer.

My AO3 writing experience has always been a side thing, a little hobby to do on the side for fun, but whenever I start working on a fanfic to post, I get all in my head about. I make it much more of a deal than it should be, essentially. So, much like my novel drafts, it gets pushed to the side, tossed on the back burner, and isn’t touched until the vibes are right.

Not exactly the best way to write, let’s just say.

Fanfiction and AO3 Updates!

Let’s get this out of the way first, since I know people have been wondering: Turnabout Transposed is NOT on hiatus! Yippeee!! Wahoo!!

But, I still haven’t gotten to Act 2.

Essentially, I’ve been working on the edits for Act 1 since the last update of Turnabout Transposed (which, if you’re a real one, was July of last year). I was still dealing with school during that Fall and Spring, so I didn’t really have the time to work on Turnabout Transposed in the meantime. And, since it was my last year, I wanted to finish those semesters strong.

Summer hits, and I’m absolutely exhausted. Turnabout Transposed was unfortunately the last thing on my mind. I started submitting my original works to journals, trying to find a job, working through internships, and frankly, the fun writing project I started back in 2021 just wasn’t feeling fun anymore.

There’s so much of that writing that I don’t like. So many aspects that seem like plot holes. So much of the story still doesn’t make sense, and is complicated to edit. And yet, it continues to be my most supported work (which is incredible, and I greatly appreciate it, by the way).

Do I really want to work on this project when I could work on my original works and try to get published? Do I want to prioritize finishing Turnabout Transposed when there’s already so much on my plate?

How can I work on something for fun when I barely have the time to work on my original works?

I didn’t really have an answer. I still don’t really have an answer. But, I do know that I want to finish Turnabout Transposed. I want to give it the ending it deserves after falling into the gutters of my brain for so many years.

I want to see it come to fruition.

So, hopefully, that answers your questions on Turnabout Transposed. I still have hope for it, and I want to finish it one day, but it has to be done on my schedule (whatever that ends up being). I’ll make sure to post when I’m working on it on my BlueSky and Tumblr so you all are more frequently updated on it.

I won’t let it die just yet!

What About Your Other Works?

That is the question, isn’t it? If I’m struggling so much with Turnabout Transposed, where does that leave series like Three Fated Souls and Our Inner Voices?

Shockingly, they’re still in the works. Well, granted, Our Inner Voices was always meant to be something I infrequently update, so I never really planned an end for it. Are there a lot more POVs I still want to explore? Sure. But, it never was my priority to get those out as soon as I humanly could.

On the other hand, Three Fated Souls will have to take a backseat to Turnabout Transposed. This is inevitably it’s fate, of which I was aware of when I posted the first two chapters back in January. My side project to my side project, if you will. Likely, it’ll get updated concurrently with Turnabout Transposed, since they’re different enough series for me to easily separate in my head.

The goal for both Turnabout Transposed and Three Fated Souls is to try to post an update once a month, or once every other month. So, once I get my Turnabout Transposed edits out there, be sure to look out for more updates from me!

What About NeeineWrites?

A funny question, to say the least, since I feel like these stories go under the radar for most. If you’re unaware of what NeeineWrites is, it’s essentially my AO3 Pseud for original works. I made it because I had a friend that wanted to read my short stories, and posting them on AO3 seemed easier than sending a bunch of short stories their way.

However, I learned that the publishing industry considers writing published on the internet (e.g. AO3, Tumblr, Wattpad, etc.) as a “published work,” which was terrifying news as an upcoming writer. Since I want to have my stories published through more legitimate means, I had to take a couple stories down.

Likely, NeeineWrites will not be updated anymore going forward. However, everything that’s on there already will stay there as remnants of my old writing, and as such, are free for you to read!

Other General Writing News!

Just in case you’ve been curious as to what I’ve been doing outside of AO3 this whole time: I have been writing quite a bit!

Well, for the most part.

Some of the works I had been trying to work on all year were starting to really drain me creatively. No matter how hard I tried, every time I open their drafts, I left feeling emotionally drained. So, I put those works on hiatus, took a few out of hiatus, and cleaned up my whole writing plan.

Reordering my creative writing priorities was probably the best thing I’ve done.

It really forced me to assess what works were enjoyable to work on, and which works I hadn’t worked on in a while that still sparked some joy in me. And honestly? I highly recommend doing that for writers who just keep ramming their head into the Writer’s Block wall with no progress.

On top of that, I plan on doing NaNoWriMo this year (independently, of course), so I should be updating my works more frequently in general come November. Hopefully, every day for the month of November, I’ll be working on some writing projects in some capacity, be it fanfiction, original works, or this Substack. No stress, no deadlines, no word count to reach; the goal is to just see how much I can write in one month.

I plan on keeping track of what I’m writing in a personal Google Sheet; however, if you want to join in the fun, attached below is my tracking sheet and we can compare notes by the end of November!

NaNo Tracker with November dates, tracking word count, what the words were written for, and other general notes.

Thanks to everyone who’s been very patient in my updates!

Stay tuned for next week! Until then!

What's This All About Anyway?

Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of my time writing. Writing little books to give to my family, writing fanfiction to share on Archive of Our Own (AO3), writing informational essays in school — you name it, I’ve done it. But, personal essays? Blog posts? I’ve never really understood how to write those, let alone how to write it well.

For some reason, in a lot of writing spheres, posting articles to a blog is considered practical experience for writing jobs. Why, might you ask? Well, it’s technically writing and it’s technically published since you’re posting it online for possibly many people to see. Technically, the things I post to AO3 are published works (or well, at least my finished works are), so the notion of writing seems to be quite free on the internet.

Most of my digital footprint sticks to the social media sphere of things. It’s what I’m most comfortable working with, and it’s what I’m most familiar with. But, if I could create a blog that wasn’t too far off of my own social media, I could have actual published writing out there and practice with a format I don’t write too much.

So, Here We Are!

My goal for this blog is to practice, mostly. Get my writing out there, learn how to write interesting articles, blog posts, and personal essays, and see how to garner an audience. This is going to be a learning process for me, and hopefully you, my dear reader, as we figure out yet another new platform.

I’m gonna keep a lot of my posts here specific to things I’m interested in talking about, much like I do on my BlueSky and Tumblr. Things like writing tidbits and struggles, video game reviews and historical features that are cool to me, and various other fandom-related discussions will be the highlight of this blog.

This will be a learning process for us all, and I can’t wait to see how this goes! It’s definitely going to be a wild ride, so buckle up!

But, that’s all I’ve got for now! Tune in next week where I discuss the state of affairs for my writing (and of course, Turnabout Transposed 👀).
